CSR Progress at Progressive

Progressive Insurance Company - History, Quotes, and Policies

Founded in 1937, The Progressive Corporation's nationwide workforce of over 60,000 employees has provided U.S. consumers with financial and insurance services. Great Place to Work (2024) mentions that 92% of the workforce state it is a great place to work, higher than the market average of 57%, earning Progressive a spot in the top 100 companies to work for in the United States. This achievement is one of the reasons I believe The Progressive Company is socially and ethically responsible and my preferred insurance company.

Social Responsability

There is a reason employees enjoy working for The Progressive Corporation. According to Progressive's 2023 Corporate Sustainability Report, 44% of employees belong to an Employee Resource Group (ERG) such as the military, disabilities awareness, and LGBTQ+ networks. These ERGs aided selected charities with special programs, events, and campaign drives and donated 1.45 million dollars to the charities in 2023 alone. One of the charities Progressive contributed almost $5,000,000 in 2023 is the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), an independent, nonprofit, and non-political organization whose mission is to reduce losses, including deaths, injuries, and property damage, from crashes in the nation’s roads. Progressive has also decreased its operations' environmental impact by managing its energy, waste, and carbon emissions (Progressive, 2024). In 2022, Progressive negotiated a renewable energy agreement with a wind farm in Pennsylvania, which supplies power for sites served by the PJM wholesale energy exchange that has reduced electricity-related carbon emissions by roughly 31,000 metric tons of CO2e per year. Progressive installed a 1.8-megawatt solar panel array at one of its main locations in Ohio. It will provide an ROI by helping save on energy costs over time and is expected to reduce the site's emissions by 1,500 metric tons annually. The insurance company also focuses on reducing and responsibly managing waste created by its operations. In 2021, over a quarter of the waste collected at Progressive Cafe campuses was diverted from landfills to recycling centers and they removed plastic straws and utensils in campus locations and break areas, as well as, removed polystyrene food containers in CafĂ© locations and replaced plastic utensils and polystyrene food packaging with compostable options (Progressive, 2024).

"Green" for Profit & Environment

I believe The Progressive Corporation is environmentally conscious for both profit and sustainability. Despite not heavily advertising their sustainability efforts or emission reductions, their focus on being green is likely to result in long-term savings for the company. Additionally, the compostable options available at their cafes demonstrate their commitment to both profit and the environment.
