Miller Lite vs. Budweiser

Beer giants AB InBev and SABMiller agree mega-merger - BBC News

Anheuser-Busch and Molson Coors own over 50% of the beer market share in the United States (Karlovitch, 2022). This level of competition has caused the intense rivalry between the parent companies and their products, specifically Anheuser-Busch's Budweiser and Molson Coors' Miller Lite, two of the most popular beers in the United States.

Budweiser & Miller's Brand Strategy

Budweiser and Miller Lite use similar branding strategies. Both brands use online branding, such as their websites, social media channels, or TV ads, to improve their digital position. Both brands use product branding and activist branding by highlighting the look and tastes of the product along with various social issues such as women's rights and communities like the transgender community (Karlovitch, 2022). Both brands use cultural branding but target different lifestyles and groups. Budweiser presents itself as an all-American brand that values the traditional American lifestyle, while Miller Lite targets health-conscious consumers with its "Lite" beer. Anheuser-Busch then created the Budweiser Light, a lighter version of their flagship beer, to compete directly with Molson Coor's Miller Lite, now the most popular beer in the nation, officially making Miller Lite the underdog.

How Miller Lite Can Improve

By enhancing its branding strategy, Miller Lite has the potential to not only increase its market share but also to potentially surpass Budweiser. Some recommendations Miller Lite could utilize to improve its strategy include:

  • Focusing on Niche Audiences: Focusing on a specific group of consumers, such as environmentally cautious consumers, can make Miller Lite form a deeper connection with its audience, fostering brand loyalty.
  • Storytelling: It is a powerful tool that can take consumers on a journey and infuse authentic life into the brand. This helps create personal bonds with the audience, making them feel more engaged and connected to the brand.
  • Develop a Unique Selling Propisition: A USP is crucial for Miller Lite to stand out from the competition. This can pique the interest of consumers and make them more likely to choose Miller Lite over other brands.

Why Budweiser over Miller Lite?

Budweiser and Anheuser-Busch have the highest market share for beer in the United States, but why is that? Budweiser's massive success is primarily due to Anheuser-Busch's vast marketing and risky entrances to new markets, such as the seltzer industry, which Miller Lite has refused to enter (Karlovitch, 2022). As a consumer, I prefer Miller Lite over Budweiser for the simple fact of taste. I have tried them both and prefer the taste of Miller, and it also makes me feel less bloaty, which is a bonus when choosing which to purchase after a long work day.

Conclusion

Both of the biggest companies in the beer industry utilize brand strategies to improve their brand recognition and reputation. Innovative branding strategies have made Miller Lite the successful brand it is today, although it launched almost a century after Budweiser. With successful improvements to its branding strategies, it could become the preferred beer over Budweiser for many consumers like myself and become the top dog in the beer market.
